Event rule privileges

Tue Jun 02, 2015 9:14 pm

Unless I'm missing something, it seems that privileges to modify Event Rules are an "all or nothing" proposition. There is no way to give a user the rights to activate/deactivate an existing rule without allowing that user to change all the parameters of that rule. This is a big shortcoming, because I would like users to have the option of choosing which Event Rules to activate, without giving them full editing access.

Is there currently a way to accomplish what I'm describing? If not, consider this a request to please add such functionality. I am sure that many of us would find it very useful.

Thanks.

Please note that you can also control which Event Rules are active by moving users (devices) in and out of Tags.

Yes, but activating event rules based on tags would require users to have the ability to edit device properties, which I do not want to do. It also would add unnecessary complexity to what should be a simple and straightforward operation.

It is a simple and straight forward operation to add and remove a user from a Tag. It can for example be one tag per event rule.

You can view the Tags as something that enables and disables features.

Edit User Access Mask lets you control which fields are visible when editing a User. http://gpsgate.com/blogComment/control_ ... ser_fields

Johan,

Your suggestions worked very well. But I still think it would be a great feature to have a kind of "access mask" to allow users limited ability to modify event rule properties.

In my case, for example, I would like to create 3 geofence alerts, with options to notify by email or SMS. This requires 12 tags:

enter geofence 1 - SMS
enter geofence 1 - email
leave geofence 1 - SMS
leave geofence 1 - email
enter geofence 2 - SMS
enter geofence 2 - email
leave geofence 2 - SMS
leave geofence 2 - email
enter geofence 3 - SMS
enter geofence 3 - email
leave geofence 3 - SMS
leave geofence 3 - email

You can see that this might a get a bit unwieldy!

Update: This can now be done with Custom Fields and Script Expressions, as described here: topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=18237.
