RE: Get GPS position from a browser using javascript

Tue Nov 09, 2010 11:32 pm

Hey Fredrik ... thanks ... after reviewing this thread, I see a previously live link (http://gpsgate.com/index.php?id=66) provided by Johan to specifically address my line of inquiry is now dead.

I searched "Show your local GPS position on all the main map sites" at gpsgate.com and found the page http://gpsgate.com/developer/gpsgate_web_services_examples
The "Show your local GPS position on all the main map sites" section exists but the 'Try it out here' link is dead.

What happened to the notion of 'hook'ing into an existing web page, as described?

Aha, seems that link is down. That was a reference to a bookmarklet "hack" that simply centered, i.e didn't display a marker, on a handful of public map sites when you clicked it with Gps-in-browser enabled.
As said, more of a technical hack to show an interesting use, not really intended for "serious" business. So, either I recommend using http://sysmaps.co.uk or simply create your own map, it's not that difficult there's many examples around.

@amitlath
GpsGate Client is enough to get the "Gps-in-browser" feature describe in this thread. i.e you can query the locally connected Gps from the client's browser.

If you want a solution to store the positions, gather from multiple devices, perform logical queries on the data, reporting etc you should look into GpsGate Server / VehicleTracker.

Hi,

We're looking at using GpsGate's "gps in browser" functionality, and by and large like it quite a lot. However, we've found that some parts of the nmea sentences aren't made available, most notably GPS Quality in $GPGGA which would let us know if an attached unit is in RTK or differential corrections modes.

Is there any way to access GPS/Fix Quality? Could it be added to the "gps in browser"'s webserver response? Is there any way we could add this, or does this need to be added by Franson?

Thanks,

Josh

@kyzzer
My guess is that you might have forgotten to enable "GPS in Browser" as an Output in GpsGate Client.

I want to run a webpage on a pocket pc with "opera mobile 10 touchscreen", whose gps-sensor delivers mnea-data to port 2.
Gpsgate is installed. Port 2 is configured, "GPS in browser" is activated
Call of localhost:1275/gps.html -> works fine
Call of sample page franson.com/gpsgate/gps.html -> nothing

using <script type="text/javascript" src="http://localhost:12175/javascript/GpsGate.js"></script> in own webpage -> in javascript is GpsGate undefined., GpsGate.Client.getGpsInfo(gpsGateCallback) is not available.

What can I do?

I am having an issue loading GPSGate in browser content when the base page is connected from a secure session. Chrome complains that scripts loaded from "http://localhost:12175/.." are non-secure and cannot be loaded on a secure page, and the page stops loading.

Is there a way to load this content from an ssl-enabled port?

Quite some time has passed form the answer quoted above - what is the status nowadays? Are there any plans to support https? The problem is that the world moves over to https rather fast, and unfortunately gpsgate cannot be used in this world ..
