Ipaq and Bluetooth GPS

Tue Nov 02, 2004 8:55 pm

Ipaq and Bluetooth GPS
(GpsGate 1.10 or later).

This is fixed in GpsGate 2.0.1 and later

NOTE! Early versions of Ipaq's Bluetooth stack (from Widcomm) did freeze if it the Ipaq was turn off during operation. If you have similar problems you need to upgrade the ROM image on your device. Please visit http://www.hp.com for more information.

The Widcomm Bluetooth (BT) stack used in all Ipaq handhelds pops up a "browser" each time COM8 is opened. This browser allows you to select which BT device to connect to. This can sometimes be somewhat annoying, especially when you only have one (GPS) device you want to connect to all the time.

How to set up GpsGate, Ipaq and a Bluetooth GPS:
------------------------------------------------

Using Bluetooth Manager:
1. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on.

2. Make a connection between the Ipaq and the BT GPS using Bluetooth Manager. Or pair the devices using BT Manager. (See sections below for details). If you haven't made a connection nor paired the devies, the BT browser will show up every time anyway.

Using GpsGate:
1. Start GpsGate
2. Go to the settings screen.
3. For "Retry connection", select "On timeout"
4. Select "COM Port" as Input.
4. Select "COM8"
5. Click "Open"
6. Select the GPS from the browser..

After this first time of selection GpsGate will connect to the GPS without displaying the BT browser.

Now you can switch the Ipaq on and off, the GPS on and off, GpsGate on and off, and GpsGate will always reconnect to the GPS in the background.

How to make a connection to a BT GPS on Ipaq
--------------------------------------------

1. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on on your Ipaq and that your GPS is turned on.
2. Select "Bluetooth Manager" from the BT tray icon.
3. Select "New -> Connect!" from the menu.
4. Select "Explore a Bluetooth device" and click "Next".
5. Click on "Tap here to choose a device"
6. Select the GPS you want to connect to.
7. Select the "Serial Port" (or similar) service and click "Next".
8. Click "Finish"

Your Ipaq and GPS are now connected! You can now see a shortcut under "Bluetooth Manager -> My Shortcuts"

How to pair a BT GPS with an Ipaq
---------------------------------

1. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on on your Ipaq and that your GPS is turned on.
2. Select "Bluetooth Manager" from the BT tray icon.
3. Select "Tools -> Paired devices" from the menu.
4. Click "Add"
5. Browse and select your GPS.
6. Enter the passkey for your GPS. It is "0183" (no qoutes) for Socket BT GPS, for others, please conntact your dealer or consult the manual.
7. Click "OK".

Your Ipaq and GPS are now paired!
