DMS to DD

Wed Oct 11, 2006 3:49 pm

Can anyone give me a regular expression that will reconize this co-ordinate format.
I have tried:<D="-"?{0-9}#{2++}>"° "<M={0-9}#{2}>"' "<S={0-9}#{2}>"."<s={0-9}#{4}>"\" "["S" | "E" | "N" | "W"]
I just want to convert DMS to DD.

Hi,

Your coordinate format is correct (impressive by the way, considering the syntax :). However, the format will only match either a latitude or a longitude, not a pair of them.

The second, a bit more serious thing, is that the coordinate format seems to become corrupted as it goes through the database (the °-sign turns into a question mark over here). We will look into this and I'll get back to you when we've made some progress.

It would be appreciated if you could verify this. If you save the coordinate format, close the app, restart it and then open the coordinate format again, has the ° become a question mark?

Hello Anreas
Yes the database converts the degree symbol to a question mark.
I have also tried the regular expression below but I am still unable to batch convert DMS TO DD.
<D="-"?{0-9}#{2++}>"? "<M={0-9}#{2}>"' "<S={0-9}#{2}>"."<s={0-9}#{4}>"\" "["S" | "E" | "N" | "W"]

Kevin

Any progress on the issue of the degree symbol being changed to a question mark when you save the coordinate format[?] I am having the same problem with trying to convert back & forth between (D°M'S") format & (D.dd) format[:(].

Johan,

Just wanted to make sure you got the email with the example data I sent you around the end of November related to this issue and see if you had any ideas yet?

We are aware of this scenrio. But I cannot say anything about if and when we will update CoordTrans to handle it.

WORK AROUND:
You can for example use a Search&Replace tool to replace all ° to some other charachter that CoordTrans can handle before running the conversion.

Johan

Johan,

Just wanted to check and see if you had any plans for a fix for this issue in the near future?[^] I had already used the work-around that you suggested but it is an additional step in preparing the data that I would like to eliminate.[:(] Thanks for your support for CoordTrans & GPSGate. I use both programs to display my company's GIS data in MS Streets& Trips and they work very well.[:D][:D]

We'll see what we can do till the next service release of CoordTrans. But we will not have any fix ready in the near term.

Johan, just wanted to check in and see if you had any plans to update CoordTrans to handle the "°" in coordinate formats? Looks like the questions was raised by someone else recently.

Dear Johan,
I am about to purchase CoorTrans Pro Version. All my data to be converted is in D MM SS.s format but with the ° symbol. I tried to make my own format(with the 7 day trial version) including that symbol and the problem exposed in this topic persits: a question mark appers and no conversion can be made.
Is that problem still in at the purchased version? If yes, what are the plans up to now to improve this?

Best Regards,
Alex

hi I have a csv file with the following format 116° 3.000' W saved in a cvs file. But I can't seem to be able to get the correct syntax. I need to convert DMS to DD. I've tried the standard ones. Also tried typing in DD°MM'SS(.s)" and DD°MM'(.s)"
The symbols N and W were removed as well.

116° 3.000' W , 51° 31.800' N
115° 48.000' W , 51° 40.200' N
116° 9.000' W , 51° 25.800' N
116° 13.200' W , 51° 25.800' N
115° 46.200' W , 51° 27.000' N
116° 19.800' W , 51° 27.000' N
116° 20.400' W , 51° 26.400' N
116° 19.800' W , 51° 25.800' N
116° 28.200' W , 51° 42.000' N
116° 30.000' W , 51° 37.800' N

Can you help? Thanks
