Tracking Devices and MB consumption

Fri Jan 30, 2009 9:20 pm

Hi, I'm just trying to get an idea of how much an avl device consume in MB, and so choose a Gprs plan accordingly.

I need this information for business fleet management.

Based on support data, ( topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=8890 ) the bandwidth consumption for a transaction with a device is less than 0.2 kB.

If I consider a truck moving 8 hour a day, for 5 days a week, 22 days a month, and an avl device sending position information every minute, this translate to 176 working hours a month (about 10560 minutes).

Total bandwidth would be 10560 minutes x 0,2 KB = 2112 KB or around 2MB month.

Can please someone with real world experience in this field tell me if this calculation reflect reality, or the totals will be less or much higher ?

Thank You.

Nobody can help ? [:(]

To make it simple:

someone has an idea of the rough bandwidth consumption of a tracking device in a month with a server update every minute, considering business fleet management as a reference ?

Bye

With updates every 60 seconds and a temp sensor also attached, Im using anywhere between 30-50mb

i can confirm this ...

24/7 units we have on the system .. 50 sec. trigger ...
use about 21-25 MB/ month

X1 unit with distance tracking .. (about 6000Km/month) needs about 45MB (Incl Temperature sensor)

we had some faulty TR-102's on the system before .. generated 2GB of traffic ...
(anything can be happen) ;-)

remember .. there is not only the traffic you do see..

the devices doing handshake as well, connecting and disconnecting ..
this is very much depend on the hardware itself.

if you calculate this for costs ... it should be a mixed calculation with many devices .. to get a reasonable value ...
this is very depend on the network itself, the hardware, setup, communication systems.

What would be ideal for the application for my customers would be to setup a wifi connection and set up a network and use that to upload the temperature and mileage for the day when the trucks roll in.

Your data consumption seems too high to me. Is like your units are
sending position updates 24/7 regardless if the vehicle is moving or not.

I've done the calculation using Franson support data, where the bandwidth consumption for a transaction with a device is less than 0.2 KB.

This should already include Tcp protocol information overhead.

I use the following calculations for TIME used devices (only example), and it works quite well.

size of update: 100 bytes
Update: 30 sec (.5 min)
Updates / hour : 60/.50 = 120 updates per hour
Bytes / hour : 120 x 100 bytes = 12,000 bytes
Bytes / Day: 12,000 x 24 = 288,000
Bytes / Month: 288,000 x 30 => 8,640,000 =>8.2 MB..

Assuming:
12 hours x day x 5 days a week = 60 hours week x 30 days = 1,800 operational hours a month

1,800 / 5,040 total hours a month = 36% utilization factor.

8.2 MB x 36% = 3MB

And you will need to reduce more if you use motion sensor or something similar.

My testing unit is used for a delivery truck inside city, REAL consumption was 2.5 MB

Hope this helps for your GPRS Plans

We are testing the TR-151.... and soon will be the X1...
and calculations should be more or less the same (for time base).
If you have another brand, ask about the size of the update data, but it should be no more than 150 bytes. (GPRS)...

I'm a bit confused by these differing statements.

I am looking for a network to provide a bundle deal on a contract sim card. Most resellers and networks are stating it is very rare for a vehicle tracker to use more than 5MB per month but when i am testing using a Pay As You Go sim card i have calculated that the cost for a single day equates to 3MB. Do the PAYG sim cards charge in a different way? How can i see exactly how much data is used with my tracker?
I am using a tracker with an always open connection.

this is mainly because the providers charging a minimum traffic on the first connection.
you need to set your hardware to do "keep alive" .. in order to not diconnect from the GSM Network ... then you have a small fragment more traffic .. but you not have the "connection costs" anymore ... which are much higher.

to give you an example out of own experience how different this can be:
we had 2 customers traveling, both did use Teltonika gh1202

1. Afghanistan, Iran, Italy, germany (about 2 weeks) = 2 Times 8 Euro Roaming charges
2. 5 days (!!) in Germany = 450 Euro Roaming

the only diffrence the gh1202 from the first one had "keep alive" active for 5 minutes.
the other one not .. and it generated in germany about 1200 connects where all was charged with minimum of 100KB.

Indeed, minimum charging quantity of the specific mobile operator IS critical!

Many operators charge as minimum 100KB
Others charge as minimum 10KB. This makes big big difference!

Being aware of this you have to adjust your calculation accordingly.

We use telstra 5meg data sim cards in 35 of our devices.

$5 a month for 5 meg.

Rover9 and PT35's

Very rarely do they go over the 5meg

Vehicles operate just under 8 hours a day with updates every 20 seconds

Every update is charged at 1k
