NMEA data from GPSGate Server

Sun Aug 12, 2007 6:44 am

Hi there,

I am looking at the server software for a specific task.

I would like to be able toextract the NMEA data from the server once it has been sent.

The reason being is to merge it back with photos taken by the user. I can easily match up the user and images outside the software, but need to know if GPSGate server can export the history of the user.

Hope this makes sense.

Cheers,

Nick

You have some different ways of doing this.

1. Take a look at the track_data & track_info tables.

You need the positions, and not necessarily the NMEA data? Take a look at the database. There is one table called track_data which stores a position every 10 seconds (in build 62). How often and by what criteria can be configured. And track_info which is a "header" for each track.

2. Use the GpsGate Protocol to get a stream of NMEA data

GpsGate.com Client SDK contains a protocol on how to get a live NMEA stream of data from GpsGate Server. It is TCP/IP based, or you can use .NET assemblies found in the SDK or an ActiveX. Download here, more docs in the download:

3. Store data to NMEA log files on server

This feature is coming in the next service release of GpsGate Server. It will allow you to save all incoming NMEA data to separate files on the server for each user.

Thanks for that.

we need the time and the position. To embed the GPS coordinates into an image it looks at the camera time and matches it to the GPS data.

We could call up the info from the tables. I hadn't looked into how it was stored. we'd had probably 40 to 50 users to sort etc.

Option 3 looks like a good option too. How far away is the service release?

Thanks again,

Nick

Since you are only after time and position I would recommend option 1, since then there you have fast access to structured data, just some simple SQL queries and you have what you want.

In option 3 you have slow access to unstructured data, it can be an option when you have tools that needs NMEA data as input, or if the NMEA data contains a lot of custom information. You get dumps of the NMEA data sorted per user and a new file is created each day.

The service release will be out in 10 days.

Hi Johan,

Thanks for your advice. Will test it out and see how I go!

I gather with the NMEA dumps they will be sorted per user/device?

Cheers,

Nick

Yes, per user.
