Greetings Guys,
Yesterday (after I did the latest updates) I got a "no maps loaded" error in my GGS application and when I tried to change the maps key I saw that Google had changed the way keys are generated. It was a bit confusing to find the way new keys are generated so I thought to share this information with all of you
1. Go to this link and sign in with your gmail account
https://code.google.com/apis/console
2.On the page that opens up just click "Create Project"
3.Click On Google Maps API v3 or v2 according to your needs and Accept the terms and conditions.
4.Click API Access (which is on the left of your screen)
5.Click the "Create new Browser Key" button
6.Write the url of your application in the text box and click "Create"
7.Copy Paste the new key to your application and you are Done :)

You need a Google Maps v2 key.

Follow these steps to install the key in GpsGate
1. Login to SiteAdmin
2. Go to "Maps"
3. Paste the key to the field for "Free API Key".
4. Click Save. Done!

Thanks for informing!

Just curious, I dont find where to get the free api key:
http://www.google.com/apis/maps/signup.html
----------------------------
Sign Up for the Google Maps API

The API keys generated by this page are no longer available. Please see the relevant section below for the API you using.

Google Maps JavaScript API v3

The Google Maps JavaScript API v3 does not require an API key to function correctly. However, we strongly encourage you to load the Maps API using an APIs Console key which allows you to monitor your application's Maps API usage. Learn how to use an APIs Console key.

Google Earth API

The Earth API no longer requires an API key.

Google Maps JavaScript API v2

Note: The Google Maps Javascript API Version 2 has been officially deprecated as of May 19, 2010. The v2 API will continue to work as per our deprecation policy, but we encourage you to migrate your code to version 3 of the Maps Javascript API.

The APIs Console can be used to generate new keys for your existing Maps JavaScript API v2 applications. Learn how to use an APIs Console key.

Google Maps API for Flash

Note: The Google Maps API for Flash has been officially deprecated as of September 2, 2011. The Flash API will continue to work as per our deprecation policy, but we encourage you to migrate your code to version 3 of the Google Maps JavaScript API.

New keys are no longer available for the Maps API for Flash.

For v2 maps the page above points to:
https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/v2/introduction#Obtaining_Key
-> https://code.google.com/apis/console
Google is now more actively monitoring a maps quota.

.. or you can of course buy Google licenses from us now:

If you login to your Google account and go to: https://code.google.com/apis/console
You find Google maps (along with many other services) under the "Services" tab.
Next to "Google Maps API v2" you should find the quota number.

Hello Fredik,
Google Maps API v2 is "OFF" ...
Should I turn it on? is there any issue with my previous free api key?
Im worried that if I turn it ON the previous key will stop working or something like that.

Yes, you should turn it on. I'm not sure about any effect on previous keys, ask/search at Google. Or simply use use a new key I guess.

DEAR FREDERIK,

WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO UPDATE API2.0 TO API 3.0 FOR GPSGATE? API3.0 HAS VERY NICE FEATURE THAT WE CAN ADD CONTENTS BY OURSELVES! COULD YOU PLEASE UPDATE YOUR GOOGLE MAPS PLUGIN INTO API3.0 URGENTLY! I SUPPOSE, IT SHOULD BE YOUR PRIORITY 1 TASK FOR A WHILE. THE ADVANTAGES ARE VERY CLEAR: USER CAN ADD PHOTOS AND ADVANCED DETAILS INTO THEIR MAP! CURRENTLY, GPSGATE SHOWS ONLY POI'S, WHICH ARE ONLY THE BASIC AND NEEDS THE HAND OF THE SITE ADMIN. OUR USERS WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IF THEY HAD ABILITY TO ADD THEIR OWN, HIGH QUALITY CONTENT INTO THEIR MAP! EXAMPLE: FOR DELIVERY COMPANIES THEY WOULD ENHANCE THEIR POI DATABASE INTO MORE, WITH PHOTOS, ADVANCED DECRIPTIONS, LINKS, PHONE NUMBERS ETC..

PLEASE, MAKE THE API 3.0 YOUR MAJOR PRIORITY AS GPSGATE IS REALLY SLOW ON ANY NEW STRATEGICAL TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES, DO NOT LIMIT YOUR CAPABILITIES JUST BY ENHANCING OR FIXING THE BUGS. WE NEED SOME NEW TECHNOLOGY!

Hi,

I just received an email from google:

"
Dear Maps API for Business customer,
We have detected that you are still using the deprecated Google Maps Javascript API V2 ... The Google Maps Javascript API V2 was deprecated on May 19, 2010 and will continue to work until May 19, 2013. After that date, we will no longer offer support for this API and it will be eventually decommissioned, We strongly recommend you to upgrade to using the new Google Maps Javascript API V3"

Yes, we're aware of this and will upgrade in due time.
(the GpsGate Mobile application already uses v3 for example).

Hi,

I have received another email from google:

"We have detected that you are still using the deprecated Google Maps Javascript API V2 with your Maps API ... The Google Maps Javascript API V2 was deprecated on May 19, 2010 and will continue to work until May 19, 2013. After that date, we will no longer offer support for this API and will begin the decommissioning process."

Is there a plugin or something already available to start using Google V3?

Hi Johan

Will you also be changing your "web services" examples to reflect API v3? I need to change all my existing code.

Thanks, Anton
