Wire Connections

Thu Jul 09, 2009 8:48 pm

I have a Garmin with TxD, RxD and Ground, (plus +/- 12vdc)
My laptop has USB only. I just got GpsGate free trial. How do I wire the wires on the GPS into my USB port? Sorry if question is stupid, I really am new at this.....

OK, I installed all Franson GpsGate software and have my USB Sesmons BU-353 GPS connected on virtual com 4 and I have three programs sharing that information (SeaClearII) and (Goops) and (GPSMonitor2.1) so I am happy that everything works very well!!!! Now, I would like to connect the four loose wires coming out of my Garmin 162 as described above into the laptop. Can I just rig a USB cable to connect to the loose wires as USB2 to Garmin3 TxD, USB3 to Garmin4 RxD and USB4 to Garmin2 Ground, and connect a 5vdc source to USB1?????

OK, I am not one to wait around. I think I found my answer on-line by searching. My Garmin comm port is 4800 baud, as is my Sesmons BU-353 GPS, but maybe the difference is that the Sesmons GPS has a built-in interface to allow it to connect to the USB port of my laptop while the Garmin 162 does not. If that is true then I need something like a Keyspan 19HS USB to serial interface (Walmart and other places). Right? I hate to spend money for hardware I do not need.
