Bluetooth as Beacon

Tue Jan 08, 2008 2:07 am

Hi,

I am new to Bluetooth technology and have an application where a PDA is to be used to detect Bluetooth devices at various locations in a building. The devices do not actually need to transfer data but simply be identified.

The target is Windows Mobile V6 and the development platform is VB.NET 2005.

I am hoping I can realize a solution using the Blue Tools sdk.

Is there a simple method using the Blue Tools for obtaining a unique identifier from a bluetooth device when the PDA comes within range of it (No data needs to be transfered, the RS232 Bluetooth devices are low cost so I was hoping I could simply apply power and run it stand alone) ?

Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions.

You can simply run a device discovery and the address of the devices will be an unique identifier.
Look at the FindAndConnect sample. It basically already does what you need.

Jonas,

Thanks for the feedback. I have one other query if you don't mind.

Is there a command in the sdk that will report the received signal strength of the Bluetooth device ?

Thanks in advance.

RemoveDevice.SignalStrength reports the strength of the signal, but this is only available with the Widcomm stack. It doesn't exists on the Microsoft stack.

Hi David, we are trying to get the signal strength data as well, and was wondering if you had any luck with it, and if so, if you can share with us what did you do in order to get it.. thanks..
