GpsGate & Garmin Mobile PC

Sat Apr 26, 2008 5:50 am

Anyone got it working with each other? I have purchased the Mobile PC so I could use it with my own GPS but would still like to be able to use gpsgate server for tracking.

I could use either on their own but not together.

I have Garmin Mobile XT and GPSBuddy working on my Sprint Mogul and they pretty much play well together. They're both good with sharing the GPS Chip and nobody's had to go to timeout yet!

I just submitted a support ticket on this issue (via http://franson.com/gpsgate/support.asp). There are several of us who have already noticed Garmin Mobile PC doesn't see virtual ports created by Franson GPS Gate.

Garmin Mobile PC is a brand new PC navigation software program (released only few weeks ago, April 2008). I'm sure this issue will be addressed soon.

Johan, after I do the "add hardware" trick, Garmin Mobile PC lists the new com port in GPS settings as an option, but still, even when I select the new com port, Garmin Mobile PC doesn't work. It keeps on searching for 10 or 15 seconds, and then it tells me it cannot find my GPS receiver (USB BU-353).

(Yes, I did create a corresponding virtual com port in GPS Gate.)

Why does Garmin always have to be different? [:D]

Try to add a "Virtual COM Port / Garmin Emulation" as Output.

I'm on the road at this moment, and I only have an old GPS Gate (version 2.0) available here for testing. It's not working, but it may just be related to this old version. At home I recently downloaded the new v.2.6 to test this issue.I will try it again later on with v.2.6 when I get home. I'll let you know. Thanks!

I just spent over an hour playing with it at home (v.2.6). No luck. I give up (for now, anyway [;)])

Hello - just wondering if anyone found out a solution to this problem. I'm also using Garmin Mobile PC and cannot make GPSGate work with it.

Even when using the posted instructions to add new hardware then create a virtual port, GMPC refuses to see the new COM port (it IS listed in device manager with a yellow exclamation point).

Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Brian

I just installed Garmin Mobile PC and couldn't "make him see" GPS Gate. I have Garmin nRoute and it works with GPS Gate perfectly, but GMobilePC won't see it. I just added second reciever (from ALK's CoPilot 8) and Garmin Mobile PC uses that one. All my other navigation systems (Garmin nRote, MS S&Trips, DeLorme Street Atlas and CoPilot Truck 8 and 11) are using GPS Gate.

I have recently been trying to get Garmin Mobile PC to work with GPS Gate. As everyone else I was having no luck until now, It can be done.

Garmin Mobile PC will not recognize the Virtual Com ports created by GPS Gate. I first determined if Garmin Mobile PC would recognize the NEMA data stream created by GPS Gate. I installed a multi port serial card in my PC and tied two of the ports together with a Null Modem cable. I then Added an output to GPSGate and selected COM Port option (NOT Virtual Com Port it is further down the list). In this setup GPS Gate acts like a NEMA GPS connected to the second COM port. Starting Garmin Mobile PC it would recognize the GPS on the second of the COM ports and it worked.

The next step was to replace the multiport serial card with a Null Modem emulator. You read more about these things here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COM_port_redirector

I used a open source (free) one located at;

http://com0com.sourceforge.net/

Click on the com0com link then follow the download links and download com0com-2.1.0.0-i386-chk.zip

Install the program, the instruction make reference to configuring everything via a command line, however there is a GUI configuration utility installed in the program group. The only thing that may need changing is the COM port names.

Now set GPSGate to feed NEMA data to the higher number of the two ports at the default baud rate of 4800. The baud rates and using the higher of the two ports is what first worked for me I don't know that it is required for sure.

Run Garmin Mobile PC it should now find a GPS at the other Virtual Null modem port.

The data flow is something like this.

GPSGate->Virtual Null Modem Port 1 -> Virtual Null Modem Port 2 -> Garmin Mobile PC

The virtual COM ports created by com0com do not show up in device manager however they do show up in Garmin Mobile PC. You can see them by;

Settings -> System -> Remote GPS -> Disable

So Garmin Mobile PC will work with Virtual COM ports just not the ones created by GPSGate. I'm glad I don't have to figure out the causes of these problems.

I hope other people with this problem will also find this thread.

Hi,
I wanted to add a couple of things from my experience w/ this. It appears that the version of Mobile PC that is packaged w/ the 20x is crippled, in that it is married to the 20x. There is however, an option during install to use an activation process in lieu of attaching a Garmin receiver, assuming you had a proper serial #, which is _NOT_ included. Whether this would work w/ virtual ports I can't say, I'd be curious to know if anyone has pulled it off. From what I've seen on various forums, the "serialized" version of the s/w has additional options for selection of com ports, etc. on the Remote GPS screen. The only options I see on my bundled s/w are bluetooth and USB, and I can't get the s/w to see the 20x thru gpsgate or any other port replicator/splitter/virtualizer I've tried, including the above method. Was that w/ the version of Mobile PC packaged w/ the 20x or an install with activation?

I'm more than a little peeved that what I thought was a "package deal" on two new Garmin products purchased together turned out to be a pretty much crippled s/w. Garmin has forced us to use Garmin-only receivers w/ this version, and there is no option to "upgrade" the s/w to a generic install. I would have paid them $20 or so, but no, you have to buy another copy of the s/w at full price, basically. Not cool. I don't recall seeing this anywhere in the product blurb...

Several of us tried it with the software-only version of Garmin Mobile PC, but no luck. Ane user described his solution, and if you wish you could read about it in the following thread: How to make Franson GPS Gate work with Garmin Mobile PC

<font color="red">* * * GOOD NEWS * * * </font id="red">

Garmin Mobile PC now works with Franson GPS Gate. Garmin released a downloadable patch version 5.00.50, and one of the undocumented fixes seems to be the compatibility with GPS Gate.
