GUIDE: Specifying the Google Maps key

Guide: How to specify Google Maps key in GpsGate Server

If you choose to use Google Maps (the default) in GpsGate Server you need to obtain a license key from Google to get correct functionality.
You need a Google account for access (if you use Gmail you have one already).

Go to SiteAdmin->Maps->Google.
(These instructions are essentially same as on the plugin page in SiteAdmin).

----------------------------------------------------------------------

- If using a Standard key:

Select the "Standard Key" radiobutton.

You need one key for the visual Map and one key for the Geocoding service

* Follow these steps to get a Maps API key:

1. Go to the Google Developers Console.
2. Create or select a project (in the top right hand menu).
3. Go the API Manager overview (in the left hand menu).
4. Enable the Google Maps JavaScript API.
5. Go to Credentials (left hand side), click New Credentials->API key and select a Browser key.
6. Give the key a name and optionally - but recommended! - specify allowed HTTP referrers (web sites).
7. Click Save and then Copy and Paste the generated key into the field called "Maps JavaScript API Key" in the SiteAdmin->Maps->Google interface - done!
8. (Optional) Enable billing. See Usage Limits for more information.

Read more here.

* Follow these steps to get a Geocoding API key:
(Geocoding is used to find an address based on a location and vice versa).

1. Go to the Google Developers Console.
2. Create or select a project (in the top right hand menu).
3. Go the API Manager overview (in the left hand menu).
4. Enable the Google Maps Geocoding API.
5. Go to Credentials (left hand side), click New Credentials->API key and select a Server key.
6. Give the key a name and optionally - but recommended! - specify accepted IP addresses.
7. Click Save and then Copy and Paste the generated key into the field called "Maps Geocoding API Key" in the SiteAdmin->Maps->Google interface - done!
8. (Optional) Enable billing. See Usage Limits for more information.

Read more here.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

- If using a premier/enterprise key:

Select the "Premier Key" radiobutton.

When you purchased a premier key Google should have sent you a Client ID in the format: "gme-yourcompanyname" (observe the "gme-" prefix), together with a private key that is in the format bE3TEGCYHHH6VuW789WYcSHUyi=

1. Enter your Client ID in the textbox "Premier API Client ID".
2. Enter your private key in the textbox "Premier API Private Key".
3. Click Save - done!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

- If using a GpsGate Google key:
Read how to purchase a GpsGate Google key here: http://gpsgate.com/purchase/google_maps

Select the "GpsGate-Google" radiobutton and paste your key in the "GpsGate" field.

RE: GUIDE: Specifying the Google Maps key

Hello Fredrik,

I have bad experience for few weeks with free google map API, luckily Johan help me to fix this issue.
-The problem is free google map API limit 2,500 geocode address request per day, so when it reached maximum google block and make connection from gps device to server timeout then disconnect for 3 or 4 hours until start new day.

-I suggest your software should add function:
a). Alert user that it reach maximum limit of free google API.
b). Disable geocoding address request and continue allow gps
device connect to server as normal.
-Your software should support geododing address with other web map such as OpenStreetMaps, GeoServer...., because google map API premier very expensive and not available in my country.

Thanks
Best regards
Limyo

I have an ancient free buddy tracker acount and I have a public web page to display my location. That web page has been offline for a year now and now I would like to make it work again. I got the API key from google but now I'm stuck with this:

> Step 2 - Enter the key in GpsGate Server
> You enter the key in the tab SiteAdmin->Maps->Google.

I just can't find the SiteAdmin tab or any other place to put the api key.

And any step-by-step instructions (with .html example) to get the web page running again would be nice.

Just for clarification.
With the current Google Developers Console you need a BROWSER API Key not server.

ti doe snot work for me, every-time I use the API key (for browser), there is a message that either the key is invalid or there are not the right permissions. What gives?

Don't let your browser copy&paste function add any leading or trailing blank spaces.
Maybe a future update could include trimming spaces from data entry?
