GPS 18 Serial (not USB)

Wed May 03, 2006 12:55 pm

I have a Garmin GPS 18 Serial that works perfectly with nroute but not with anything else. I tried to configure it with Garmin's tool but it won't stay in NMEA mode; so I can't get GPSgate to recognize it. I can't make any sense of Garmin's documentation for the SNSRCFG utility. Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards,
Tom

Sorry,

I should have posted this in the 1.10 forum, although maybe running 2.0 will solve the problem.

Yes, GpsGate 2.0 should take care of this problem.

Using GpsGate, you can connect to a Garmin 18 Serial and run nRoute and other NMEA GPS applications at the same time.

Using Garmin GPS as Input:

Connect nRoute to GpsGate 2.0

Yes, you should get that.

Why don't you simply try?

Well I tried it & it works with my apps (sort of). So far, the problems I have encountered are:

1) Every time I start nRoute, it tells me that the gps clock & the computer clock are significantly different; the gps clock being as much as 24 hours or more behind actual time. (Currently I'm in Pacific Daylight Time zone — if that makes any difference.)

2) It responds very slowly. Sitting still, it gives the correct position, but as I drive, the gps is about 1-3 minutes behind my current location. If I stop moving, the gps will eventually catch up & display my correct position. This happens in MS Streets & Trips 2006, Delorme Topo, & Garmin nRoute 2.6.1.

3) Elevation is always displayed as 0 ft.

Tom

1) Is the time corrent after nRoute has told you the times differ? We have experienced that nRoute sometimes tells you there's a time difference, but after telling you this, the times are correct.

2) GpsGate should not introduce any latency in the GPS data. Does it work if you connect the GPS directly to nRoute?

3) Again, does it work if you connect the GPS directly to nRoute? Does this occure when your GPS has a 3D fix?

Answers are in order:

1) No, the time display in nRoute's trip computer is always lagging. The Windows clock is correct.

2) Yes.

3) Yes, it displays the correct elevation. It always happens when running though GpsGate regardless of whether I have a 3D fix or not.

We have identified the source of those errors, and will include fixes in the next beta release.
