Anyone got it working with each other? I have purchased the Mobile PC so I could use it with my own GPS but would still like to be able to use gpsgate server for tracking.
I could use either on their own but not together. |

I have Garmin Mobile XT and GPSBuddy working on my Sprint Mogul and they pretty much play well together. They're both good with sharing the GPS Chip and nobody's had to go to timeout yet!

I just submitted a support ticket on this issue (via http://franson.com/gpsgate/support.asp). There are several of us who have already noticed Garmin Mobile PC doesn't see virtual ports created by Franson GPS Gate.
Garmin Mobile PC is a brand new PC navigation software program (released only few weeks ago, April 2008). I'm sure this issue will be addressed soon.

Johan, after I do the "add hardware" trick, Garmin Mobile PC lists the new com port in GPS settings as an option, but still, even when I select the new com port, Garmin Mobile PC doesn't work. It keeps on searching for 10 or 15 seconds, and then it tells me it cannot find my GPS receiver (USB BU-353).
(Yes, I did create a corresponding virtual com port in GPS Gate.)
Why does Garmin always have to be different?

Try to add a "Virtual COM Port / Garmin Emulation" as Output.

I'm on the road at this moment, and I only have an old GPS Gate (version 2.0) available here for testing. It's not working, but it may just be related to this old version. At home I recently downloaded the new v.2.6 to test this issue.I will try it again later on with v.2.6 when I get home. I'll let you know. Thanks!

Hello - just wondering if anyone found out a solution to this problem. I'm also using Garmin Mobile PC and cannot make GPSGate work with it.
Even when using the posted instructions to add new hardware then create a virtual port, GMPC refuses to see the new COM port (it IS listed in device manager with a yellow exclamation point).
Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Brian |

| I just installed Garmin Mobile PC and couldn't "make him see" GPS Gate. I have Garmin nRoute and it works with GPS Gate perfectly, but GMobilePC won't see it. I just added second reciever (from ALK's CoPilot 8) and Garmin Mobile PC uses that one. All my other navigation systems (Garmin nRote, MS S&Trips, DeLorme Street Atlas and CoPilot Truck 8 and 11) are using GPS Gate. |

I have recently been trying to get Garmin Mobile PC to work with GPS Gate. As everyone else I was having no luck until now, It can be done.
Garmin Mobile PC will not recognize the Virtual Com ports created by GPS Gate. I first determined if Garmin Mobile PC would recognize the NEMA data stream created by GPS Gate. I installed a multi port serial card in my PC and tied two of the ports together with a Null Modem cable. I then Added an output to GPSGate and selected COM Port option (NOT Virtual Com Port it is further down the list). In this setup GPS Gate acts like a NEMA GPS connected to the second COM port. Starting Garmin Mobile PC it would recognize the GPS on the second of the COM ports and it worked.
The next step was to replace the multiport serial card with a Null Modem emulator. You read more about these things here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COM_port_redirector
I used a open source (free) one located at;
http://com0com.sourceforge.net/
Click on the com0com link then follow the download links and download com0com-2.1.0.0-i386-chk.zip
Install the program, the instruction make reference to configuring everything via a command line, however there is a GUI configuration utility installed in the program group. The only thing that may need changing is the COM port names.
Now set GPSGate to feed NEMA data to the higher number of the two ports at the default baud rate of 4800. The baud rates and using the higher of the two ports is what first worked for me I don't know that it is required for sure.
Run Garmin Mobile PC it should now find a GPS at the other Virtual Null modem port.
The data flow is something like this.
GPSGate->Virtual Null Modem Port 1 -> Virtual Null Modem Port 2 -> Garmin Mobile PC
The virtual COM ports created by com0com do not show up in device manager however they do show up in Garmin Mobile PC. You can see them by;
Settings -> System -> Remote GPS -> Disable
So Garmin Mobile PC will work with Virtual COM ports just not the ones created by GPSGate. I'm glad I don't have to figure out the causes of these problems.
I hope other people with this problem will also find this thread.

Hi, I wanted to add a couple of things from my experience w/ this. It appears that the version of Mobile PC that is packaged w/ the 20x is crippled, in that it is married to the 20x. There is however, an option during install to use an activation process in lieu of attaching a Garmin receiver, assuming you had a proper serial #, which is _NOT_ included. Whether this would work w/ virtual ports I can't say, I'd be curious to know if anyone has pulled it off. From what I've seen on various forums, the "serialized" version of the s/w has additional options for selection of com ports, etc. on the Remote GPS screen. The only options I see on my bundled s/w are bluetooth and USB, and I can't get the s/w to see the 20x thru gpsgate or any other port replicator/splitter/virtualizer I've tried, including the above method. Was that w/ the version of Mobile PC packaged w/ the 20x or an install with activation?
I'm more than a little peeved that what I thought was a "package deal" on two new Garmin products purchased together turned out to be a pretty much crippled s/w. Garmin has forced us to use Garmin-only receivers w/ this version, and there is no option to "upgrade" the s/w to a generic install. I would have paid them $20 or so, but no, you have to buy another copy of the s/w at full price, basically. Not cool. I don't recall seeing this anywhere in the product blurb... |

* * * GOOD NEWS * * *
Garmin Mobile PC now works with Franson GPS Gate. Garmin released a downloadable patch version 5.00.50, and one of the undocumented fixes seems to be the compatibility with GPS Gate.

I'm not sure about your GPS Gate 2.5, but my GPS Gate 2.6 works just fine with Garmin Mobile PC 5.00.60 :)

P.S. I should add to my above reply that I'm currently using GlobalSat BU-353, not the original Garmin GPS20x, if that makes any difference. But I'd suggest you to at least download the trial version of the current version of GPS Gate. I think chances are good the new version will correct it for you.

| I tried 2.6 as well with no luck. I think it has to do with the fact that I am using the version that came with a GPS receiver. Garmin says that unless you buy the standalone software, they won't let you use 'another' gps receiver (i.e. GPSgate). That's ok. I actually switched to Microsoft Streets and Trips. I like it better anyways, it's much more substance and less fluff than garmin. Thanks for the fast response! |

Fixed. There ARE still issues. Did you even bother to read mattt1986's post? I am also not able to get Garmin Mobile PC 5.00.50 to see any virtual ports created by GPS Gate 2.6. I know it's an issue with GPS Gate since I have no problem whatsoever connecting Garmin Mobile PC to the unreplicated COM port. |

Hi mears,
Which part of his post are you referring to?
In his case, since he uses the software/hardware version of GMPC, he will not be able to place any software (GPS Gate included) between GMPC and the included Garmin's GPS receiver. For that, he would, as Garmin Support told him, need the GMPC software-only version.
Which version do you have? The software-only version works now just fine with GpsGate. But if you have GMPC with either the USB GPS20x or the one with Bluetooth GPS10x, than I'm afraid you have to connect the receivers directly to the software, and you also are limited to using only that one singly GPS unit that came inside the GMPC package.

Yes, the post is old, but some of us are still having issues. It appears that I owe laptop gps world an apology since you were using the bundled version.
I'm using the standalone version. My receiver is a BU-353 and I'm using Windows 7 x64. I'm wondering if Win7 x64 is the issue here. I tried forwarding the BU-353 data to a com0com bridge using GPS Gate and GMPC didn't see those virtual ports either. I've used com0com before, so I know it was setup correctly. I tried updating GMPC to 5.00.70 and had the same issue.
Again, GMPC works perfectly fine if I configure it to use the COM port created by the BU-353 drivers, but it does not see any of the virtual com ports created by GPS Gate. |

Ok, com0com DOES work in my setup (win 7 x64, gmpc 5.00.70, & bu-353). I accidentally started an install of the 32-bit edition of com0com before successfully installing the 64-bit version. After a cleanup and reinstall, things started working correctly. So in conclusion, I do NOT believe that GPS Gate works correctly under Windows 7 x64 using the latest version of GMPC and the BU-353. So far, the few people who have had problems with gpsgate and gmpc that have come back after getting it working have mostly used com0com (I think laptop gps world is the only person I've seen who reported a problem and then got it working without com0com). If you put com0com between gpsgate and GMPC, you should be able to get things working. Unfortunately, com0com is a test-signed so you have to enable test mode.
This is the approach I took: http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=dseo

THIS IS THE FIX: Allows Garmin Mobile PC to be changed to a SOFTWARE UNIT allowing Bluetooth, USB or Serial GPS Receiver - and works with GPSGate ________________________________________________________________
Require Jetmouse (Keygen) program download from RAPIDSHARE site, version 1.4X is fine.
Start at step 9. if you have your GMPC installed....
Here is the Keygen 1.5 steps inside on how to use.
Or
Here are step-by-step instructions:
01. Install Garmin MobilePC using MAIN.msi / or 02. Run MobilePC (if installed) 03. Choose "Yes" (Did this purchase of Garmin Mobile PC include a Garmin GPS receiver) 04. Choose "Done" 05. Choose "OK" 06. Choose "Skip" 07. Choose "Yes" 08. Choose "I Agree" 09. In Settings -> About, take note of your Device ID – Needs to be the Device ID not GPS ID. If GPS ID remove GPS Receiver and repeat 10. Click "X" in top right corner to exit 11. Start patched KeyGen (use the latest keygen v.1.5) 12. In top box, enter your Device ID 13. In "Select Product" dropdown box, choose <Garmin Mobile PC> and enter your Device ID 14. Click bottom "Generate" button & copy key 15. Start Notepad, paste key and save to c:\GarminMobilePC\sw.unl – this is the install folder for GMPC.
Install where you want GMPC/GMXT and place new file (sw.unl) inside it. (Open Notepad and save as sw.unl (first line) and leave second line as txt.) Make sure its saved as sw.unl not sw.unl.txt
After this you can use any GPS for it. When you remove this sw.unl file GMPC/GMXT will be Garmin GPS use only again.
As for maps if you having issue unlocking them you have to generate its code by selecting custom map down bottom and fill in MAP ID and generate code and save as GMAPSUPP.UNL
